Lounge Music
by Mike Breen

Local "countryfolkrock" crew Len's Lounge return to the Taste of the World Cafe on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The band, led by prolific singer/songwriter Jeff Roberson, will be boasting their new album, Road Dog and More Train Songs, one of the finer Roots collections to come from this area in recent memory.

Roberson's songwriting is the focal point, and the record beautifully showcases his rich, natural writing instincts. But the group also provide soulful takes on material by kindred souls Johnny Cash ("Hey Porter"), Bob Dylan ("I'll Be Your Baby Tonight") and Jimmie Rogers ("Waiting For A Train") which gives the listener a good idea of where Roberson is coming from musically. Roberson is aptly backed on the project by several gifted local artists, including drummer Chris Brown, lapsteel master Chris Carero (who also contributes and sings the original song "I Said Git"), Afghan Whigs bassist John Curley and singer Niki Buerhrig. If you're a fan of well-played, well-arranged Country and Folk, you should definitely check out this album.

The disc is limited edition and is available at Shake It Records in Northside. To keep up with the Lounge, check the group's Web site (lenslounge.com). Besides the usual show updates, discography and bio material, the site also features two fine, unreleased covers in the MP3 format: Guy Clark's "Dublin Blues" and Nick Drake's "Pink Moon."
