The Photograph as Music Album Cover
October 22 to January 29
Joel Dorn, an accomplished
record producer and music enthusiast, once said, “As good as the music
was, it always seemed better when I looked at the album (cover) while I listened.” Now,
celebrate the album cover as a vehicle for photography during this exhibition,
organized by the Cincinnati Art Museum. Borrowed Time: The Photograph
as Music Album Cover focuses on those photographic images that have been appropriated,
or borrowed, from a photographer’s existing body of work for use as
album cover art. It features around forty-five photographs, along with their
corresponding album or CD covers.
Explore the story behind each picture and examine how the photographer’s
intentions may have been altered, or strengthened, after the image was adapted
for the cover. Design considerations, such as cropping and the addition of color
or a title, and their impact on the photograph are also discussed. In addition,
learn why the photograph was appropriated, and whether or not it characterizes
the type of music contained on the record or CD.
Many significant photographers will be represented, including Lee Friedlander,
Jerry Uelsmann, Sandy Skoglund, Bruce Davidson, and Cincinnati’s Michael
Wilson, along with a broad range of musicians from Bruce Springsteen and the
Beastie Boys to Philip Glass and Miles Davis.
